I was in my room drowning my despair in an online game of Sharp Shooters—because I really, really needed to kill something—when Will knocked on my door and came in. He watched me frag things for a few seconds, and then I let myself be torpedoed by a dozen bullets. GAME OVER. If only real life were that simple.

“What’s up?” I turned to face him.

“Someone’s downstairs for you. It’s Micah.”

My heart did a little pitter-pat and I even got a little hard. But no, that ship had already sailed. I’d done the right thing; I was sure of it.

Will must have seen something on my face. “What’s up with you and Micah anyway?”

“Nothing.”

Will raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms in a girl, don’t lie to me pose.

I sighed. “He asked me out. And I said no.”

Will’s jaw dropped open. “Micah Springfield asked you out?”

“Did I not just say that?”

“And you said no?” Will shook his head. “What the hell is wrong with you? That’s my first question. Second question: does that mean I can have him? If he’s willing to play for our team, I say ‘batter up’.” Will did a little swish with his hips. He went in and out of camp like a revolving door. Most of the time, it amused me.

“No, you can’t have him,” I said, too adamantly. “I mean… he’s Yas’s.”

“Doesn’t sound that way to me, hon.” Will gave me a pointed look. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with that scorching kiss at Ty’s party, would it?”

“He’s straight!”

Will rolled his eyes at me like I was beyond hopeless and walked out.

His words did nothing to calm my pulse down as I looked in the mirror, quickly finger-combed my hair, and made sure I looked presentable. Micah was downstairs? To see little old me? I changed my jeans to a tighter pair, not for Micah’s sake but because the one’s I had on were really shot for the day. No point in looking like a bag of dirty laundry. I had my pride.

My feet wanted to pound down the staircase, but I made myself slow down. What could Micah want now? Was he going to ask me out again? Would I have the fortitude to say no a second time? Especially in person? My stomach was in knots.

Micah was in the lobby near the front door. He looked nervous when he first saw me, but maybe I was mistaken because a blink later, he was chill Micah again.

“Hey, man, what’s up?” He held out a fist to me. We were going to be ‘bros’ then. Okay.

I bumped his hand. “Hey, Micah. Not much.” Just watching my senior year crash and burn.

He looked away and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his green canvas coat. “I hope it’s not too late to stop by.”

“Nah, I was just on the computer.”

Micah nodded as if making up his mind. He turned his face to me. His eyes were friendly—just that—but he worried at his bottom lip.
